Pitch Lake
Located in La
Brea, Trinidad, the pitch lake is the world’s largest natural deposit of
asphalt of the three existing globally. It is known as the eight Wonder of the
World and it is truly a magnificent phenomenon. The lake holds approximately 10
million tonnes of asphalt which is supplied globally. Visitors can tour the
sight and even walk on the lake. During the rainy season, water accumulates in
small ponds on the site which visitors can bathe in if they wish. Due to the
high level of Sulphur in the water, it is rumored by villagers to be ‘ponds of
life’ containing healing powers. Whether the myth is true or not, the pitch
lake remains one of the country top attractions and a must see.
That last picture makes it look gorgeous!
